The Rise of Male Plastic Surgery and Non-Invasive Trends
Americans spend billions of dollars on surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures each year. In the past, women made up most people receiving such procedures. But now more than ever, men are starting to account for many of the plastic surgery and non-invasive treatments occurring each year.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of cosmetic procedures performed on men has increased more than 325 percent since 1997. In 2016, male cosmetic procedures made up approximately 9-10 percent of the total procedures done, totaling 1.2 million procedures. This increase in male plastic surgery trends are not just happening in America. A recent report from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons shows a dramatic rise in the number of men receiving cosmetic surgery and non-invasive treatments. Since the year 2000, the number of men getting cosmetic treatments has increased by 110 percent, which brings it to an all-time United Kingdom (UK) high.
Many plastic surgeons believe the reason behind the rise in male interest in cosmetic surgery has to do with the fact that men are moving away from hyper-masculinity and unkempt fashions, and instead opting for a more well-groomed and professional image. Another popular theory as to why more men are having plastic surgery is because there are now so many non-invasive treatments available and many have no downtime, which is very appealing to men who are still not as open to confessing that they’ve undergone any procedures, as many women are.
The most common procedures that men seek out from us are:
- Botox
- Exilis
- Vanquish
- Hair removal
- Liposuction
- Rhinoplasty
- Eyelid surgery
- Male breast reduction
- Facelifts
For some men, becoming fathers or trying to compete with younger people in the workforce are what drives them to make such cosmetic changes. For others, it’s keeping up with social media and celebrity images. No matter what the reason, it is becoming clear that cosmetic surgery and non-invasive procedures currently appeal to both genders in a big way.
For men and women interested in getting cosmetic procedures done, it is imperative to make sure you see a board certified plastic surgeon with proper training and advanced education.
