LoVerme and his team are discreet professionals who strive to ensure that you feel comfortable enough to share your aesthetic concerns with us. That way, we can formulate a treatment plan that will help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

What Is Labiaplasty, Exactly?

Labiaplasty is a form of vaginal rejuvenation cosmetic surgery. With labiaplasty, Dr. LoVerme removes excess labial tissue to improve the look of a woman’s intimate area and / or to alleviate the pain or discomfort that having overly enlarged or elongated labia often cause.

Why Pursue Labiaplasty

The size and shape of a woman’s labia are typically determined by genetic factors. However, over time, other factors — such as weight fluctuations, pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations (often caused by pregnancy or chronic use of certain medications) and simply the natural aging process — can also impact the appearance of the labia.

Regardless of the cause, many women feel embarrassed or self-conscious about having labia that are excessively large, overly elongated, unusually shaped or asymmetrical, prompting them to seek cosmetic surgery to address their aesthetic concerns.

In addition, some women seek labiaplasty because they experience physical discomfort or outright pain due to their enlarged labia, especially when performing certain activities, such as riding a bicycle.

Other factors that prompt women to pursue labiaplasty and alternative forms of vaginal rejuvenation surgery include:

  • Chafing caused by excessively large labia that rub against tight-fitting clothing and / or certain exercise equipment, such as seated rowing machines or bicycles
  • Pain or discomfort when engaging in sexual intercourse, due to their enlarged or elongated labia
  • Frustration with unusually shaped or asymmetrical labia, or the overly large appearance of their labia
  • A desire to repair damage (e.g., a tear) in the vaginal area, often caused by childbirth
  • A desire to restore the vaginal region as part of mommy makeover surgery

Candidacy for Labiaplasty

The only way to know for certain whether someone is an appropriate candidate for labiaplasty or any cosmetic surgery procedure is to come in for a consultation. That way, Dr. LoVerme can review the person’s aesthetic concerns, anatomical requirements, medical and surgical history and a few other factors to determine whether that person would benefit from the procedure.

Nonetheless, suitable candidates for labiaplasty generally include women who:

  • Have a positive self-image in general but have specific aesthetic concerns about the size or shape of their labia
  • Perhaps suffer physical discomfort or pain due to their enlarged or elongated labia
  • Are generally healthy, both mentally and physically
  • Have made the decision to have the procedure of their own accord
  • Are not presently pregnant and have not been pregnant for a minimum of six months
  • Are not currently nursing and have been finished breastfeeding for at least six months
  • Have lost excess pregnancy weight, so the true size and shape of the labia are apparent

Above all, suitable labiaplasty candidates recognize both the advantages and potential risks related to the surgical procedure.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty is a relatively simple procedure and is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients can choose between local or general anesthesia; whichever option makes them feel more comfortable.

Dr. LoVerme uses specialized surgical instruments to perform labiaplasty, due to the delicate quality of the labial tissue. During the procedure, he excises surplus labial tissue and reshapes the labia, as necessary. The plastic surgeon precisely positions incisions and uses dissolvable sutures, so scarring is often imperceptible to the naked eye.

The Labiaplasty Recovery Period

The recovery period following labiaplasty is fairly quick. Patients should expect to take about three days off from work or their usual routine. For example, if a woman has the procedure on a Thursday, she can usually resume work or her normal schedule the following Monday.

We recommend bed rest for the first day or two after labiaplasty, simply to help minimize any irritation that might occur as a result of walking or wearing certain clothes. In addition, we recommend that labiaplasty patients wear loose-fitting skirts, shorts or pants for about a week after surgery. Patients will also need to use a feminine napkin for the first few days after the procedure to protect clothes from any fluid that might be present during this time.

After labiaplasty, most patients only experience minor discomfort, which can be alleviated by taking oral pain relievers. During the initial phase of recovery, patients may experience swelling, bruising or mild bleeding throughout the treatment area. These symptoms can often be alleviated by applying an icepack to the treatment area, during the first day following the procedure.

Women who have undergone labiaplasty should avoid vigorous activity, including strenuous exercise and sexual activity, for about six weeks. During a follow-up appointment, Dr. LoVerme will tell patients when it is safe for them to resume these activities.

Some of the cosmetic results of labiaplasty are apparent immediately after the procedure, but the final aesthetic benefits take about one month to become fully noticeable. This is how long it takes for the body to heal completely and for any residual swelling to resolve.

Labiaplasty Safety Information

As with any surgical procedure, certain risks are inherent with labiaplasty. However, patients can rest assured that Dr. LoVerme has extensive experience performing labiaplasty, and takes every precaution available to minimize the risk of surgical complications. In his professional opinion, there aren’t necessarily any long-term risks except for the chance of a visible scar.

Patients should follow all of Dr. LoVerme’s pre- and post-operative care instructions to optimize the final outcome of surgery.

Following labiaplasty, patients should not use tampons for at least three weeks.

Also, though the procedure should not affect future pregnancies or childbirth, patients who plan to get pregnant in the future might want to wait until they are finished having children to undergo labiaplasty, as pregnancy and childbirth can counteract the aesthetic benefits of the procedure.

Benefits of Labiaplasty

After Dr. LoVerme’s labiaplasty patients have recuperated from the procedure, they generally report:

  • Feeling more self-confident and better about themselves overall
  • Experiencing less or no discomfort while wearing snugly fitting clothing or while having sex
  • That it is easier to have an orgasm, because they are less self-conscious about the appearance of their vaginal area (Although, labiaplasty itself does not have a direct effect on the ability to have an orgasm.)

What Does Labiaplasty Cost?

Typically labiaplasty prices at Accurate Aesthetics Plastic Surgery range from $3,400 to $4,500. This includes all facility and anesthesia fees as needed. Surgery is generally performed painlessly in our certified office operating suite. You will receive a personalized quote at the time of your consultation. Consultation fee is deducted from the cost of surgery.

Other Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedures

Labiaplasty is one form of vaginal rejuvenation surgery. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery in general is becoming more popular among women, as they become more confident about pursuing cosmetic procedures designed to enhance their sense of femininity and youthfulness.

Other forms of vaginal rejuvenation surgery include vaginal restoration surgery to repair tears and other injuries that can occur in the vaginal region as a result of childbirth and clitoral un-hooding, which is performed to remove excess skin that may be covering the clitoris and reducing its sensitivity. Dr. LoVerme generally refers his patients with these issues to gynecologic surgeons to deal with the internal non-cosmetic issues.

Embrace Your Sense of Femininity

The principal goals of all cosmetic surgery procedures are to address an individual’s cosmetic concerns, no matter which region of the body they pertain to, and to restore patients’ sense of self-confidence and vitality. The same is true with labiaplasty. By performing labiaplasty for patients who are concerned or uncomfortable with enlarged or unusually shaped labia, Dr. LoVerme seeks to help women embrace their sense of femininity and youthful vitality.
