The Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty is a relatively simple procedure and is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients can choose between local or general anesthesia; whichever option makes them feel more comfortable.

During the procedure, he excises surplus labial tissue and reshapes the labia, as necessary. The plastic surgeon precisely positions incisions and uses dissolvable sutures, so scarring is often imperceptible to the naked eye.

The Labiaplasty Recovery Period

The recovery period following labiaplasty is fairly quick. Patients should expect to take about three days off from work or their usual routine. For example, if a woman has the procedure on a Thursday, she can usually resume work or her normal schedule the following Monday.

We recommend bed rest for the first day or two after labiaplasty, simply to help minimize any irritation that might occur as a result of walking or wearing certain clothes. In addition, we recommend that labiaplasty patients wear loose-fitting skirts, shorts or pants for about a week after surgery. Patients will also need to use a feminine napkin for the first few days after the procedure to protect clothes from any fluid that might be present during this time.

After labiaplasty, most patients only experience minor discomfort, which can be alleviated by taking oral pain relievers. During the initial phase of recovery, patients may experience swelling, bruising or mild bleeding throughout the treatment area. These symptoms can often be alleviated by applying an icepack to the treatment area, during the first day following the procedure.

Women who have undergone labiaplasty should avoid vigorous activity, including strenuous exercise and sexual activity, for about six weeks. During a follow-up appointment, Dr. LoVerme will tell patients when it is safe for them to resume these activities.

Some of the cosmetic results of labiaplasty are apparent immediately after the procedure, but the final aesthetic benefits take about one month to become fully noticeable. This is how long it takes for the body to heal completely and for any residual swelling to resolve.

Labiaplasty Safety Information

As with any surgical procedure, certain risks are inherent with labiaplasty.
